A Closer Look at EV Docking & Battery Swapping

The automotive electrification momentum is witnessing a surge in global growth. It is projected to grow exponentially, as automotive manufacturers strive to meet aggressive targets.

According to Reuters, electric vehicles, “represent about 2% of total global sales, and will be about 24% of total sales by 2030.” More consumers are considering or are already embracing electric vehicle ownership; however, a primary end-user challenge remains.

The e-Mobility Battery Swap Solution

Resembling a cross between a quick oil change shop and a fuel station, an EV (electric vehicle) can pull up to a battery swapping station, with an almost depleted battery, and in three minutes exchange the modular battery for a fully charged one for a small fee or subscription price. The driver is back on the road for another 300 miles or so.

Alternatively, fast charging (level 3) a fixed battery can take up to a half-hour for an 80% charge. Level 1 or 2, usually for home use, takes 8-12 hours for a full-charge and is considered, by many, unrealistic for daily use.

Crucial to the profitability of a station is the number of mating cycles the battery swapping electrical components can endure. Additionally, tolerance compensation is a requirement for reliable contact resistance during the swapping movement. The highest quality power connectors are critical to the makeup of the system components.

Collaborative efforts between electric vehicle design engineers and manufacturers, and electrical component manufacturers are important to maintain throughout the development process. Secure and robust alignment features, high current carrying capacity, EMC shielding, IP sealing, vibration resistance, and high operating temperature are all requirements for discussion and adoption, as they comprise efficient and long functioning EV battery swapping.
